!Valve cap!
In your opinion, what should I do? The N52 engine is in my 2010 BMW X3 (E83). Would an aluminum valve cover be better than a plastic one?

An excellent inquiry.
I'd consult AI, but I fear it might lead me down the path of lunacy.
It should be perfectly acceptable to use a plastic cover as long as it is in excellent condition and has not been cracked or severely distorted.
I would suggest getting one of those cheap aluminum coverings to replace your shabby plastic one. The replacement gasket in the plastic cover is functioning so far, but I do have one for mine. I bought the aluminum gasket to replace the plastic one that would eventually leak because the old one was too distorted in my opinion. I haven't switched it out because it is still holding up well after eight months.

Re: !Valve cap!
The aluminum VCs are working well for many people.
Re: !Valve cap!
Yes, I did read that. However, I also read that I should use the original gasket and get an aluminum one.
Re: !Valve cap!
Why buy a new one if the old one serves its purpose? You can even get a new CCV diaphragm for $15 on eBay. I simply replaced the fractured CCV diaphragm and VC gasket, as the plastic was acceptable, instead of contemplating the aluminum.
