Do you have a sound timing chain guide?
Salutations, everyone. So, I noticed this rattling sound today when I turned on my 01 540i after letting it idle for a little. Is this the timing chain guidelines I'm looking for, or am I missing something? I hope that the slapping sound described by others as the sound of timing chain guides failing does not apply to me.

To determine if the problem is with the timing chains, you may open the oil cap and examine the chains that are visible. If there is too much play or movement, it could be the chains.
Can you tell me how many miles it has driven and whether it has had any recent maintenance?

I believe the previous owner had it in for repairs because he had the service papers when I purchased the car. Roughly 170,000 miles (or 189,000 kilometers) make it up.

Re: Do you have a sound timing chain guide?
Is it exclusive to cold starts or does it occur with every start temperature?
Even while it's not a definitive solution, checking to see if the chain is in play can provide you with a clue. Is there a power outage, idling problems, or anything else?

In my opinion, the sound is simply the chain turning on the vanos gear. It doesn't bother me in the least.
