Unidentified wire connection

Does anyone have any idea what the purpose of the coax-type connector under the driver's side hood, along the fender, is? Two wires from the wire harness and two wires from the connector go back into a hole in the firewall; the connection is of the inline coax style. An Euro Mercedes 500sl from 1984.

Florida residents should be on the lookout for fruit rats. Up in the engine bay, they will wreak havoc.Therry ripped the connector's wires off.

Not knowing anything about that model makes me question it's OEM.
