Unproductive wait
Unproductive wait
Hello, I am contacting you regarding your Mini Cooper S r56. I have recently rebuilt the engine on my own, using only new parts with less than 2000 miles on them. The only thing I have used so far is a rocker cover vacuum pump and HPFP, both of which have good pressure and oil pressure. You have already cleaned and replaced the valves, and the engine has had new lifters, rockers, Vanos, and timing. I have searched high and low for a solution, but to no avail. Before the engine was rebuilt, there was no idling issue or power loss. Any ideas? I've done everything that could be related to a probable PCV issue.

As said before, inspect the base. Then, perform a complete smoke test of the intake, exhaust, each cylinder (with the valves closed), and both sides of the turbo to identify any potential leaks.
I would also like to confirm with you that the timing kit that came with it from BMW or FAI had all the necessary components, such as sprockets, chain, guide, etc., because anything else wouldn't work. As I say, I'm just checking.
You should also check to see if the rectang rings at the camshaft ends have been replaced, since they also drain oil pressure.
Does the gasoline HPFP require a scan instrument, or is it self-bleeding?

Apologies for the response. I'll arrange for a smoke test, and no, I didn't swap out the camshaft rings. I was thinking about it after posting, but I did swap out the rocker cover for a used one because the old one was cracked above the turbo and was leaking. The engine wasn't having this idle problem before it died, and I haven't researched the hpfp bleeding.

We appreciate the update and would like to know your findings. Given his extensive knowledge of these engines, Mike will provide his insights into the bleed process.
Re: Unproductive wait
If the retang rings are not replaced (the old ones were metal) and the gaps are not adjusted 180 degrees apart and flush with the edges of the end cap and the head, I've noticed that they can snap off the ears and lead to timing problems, which manifest when the motor is not in use.
