Reduced AC refrigerant levels

Post by julianzk »

This 1987 560sl has been in my possession for about two years. According to the previous owner, the air conditioner needed to be charged monthly. Over the past two years, the air conditioning has been gradually losing its effectiveness. Possibly R-12, though I can't be sure. A recharging kit is available online.

Do you have any ideas for what to do next? The majority of the local auto shops are unwilling to work on such an ancient vehicle.

Now that I'm a South Carolinian, my 100-pound German Shepherd would love the comfortable interior. Also, the backseat is just the right size for a large German Shepherd.

Due of the exorbitant price, I do not believe I have been converted. I don't need an air conditioner because I just put a few miles on this vehicle every day, but having one would be nice.

It is unfortunate that other refrigerants cannot be added to an R-12 system. Fortunately, R-12 is still accessible. The challenge will lie in locating a technician with R-12 gages who can inspect your system for leaks and other issues. Assuming the system can be converted, I would inquire about import stores to see if anyone has the R-12 gages. If so, I would convert it.

But I've been using R12a for over 30 years with no issues; in fact, I still own a number of vehicles from that era. The idea that you can't combine it with other stuff is just urban legend.

Having the ability to do something does not imply that you should. When chemical engineers say things like "do not mix other gasses with R12," I'll take their word for it because I'm not one.

Using the right components and equipment has always been important to me. No one appreciates a sloppy job. It reveals something about the individual.
