Here I am, only a shade tree mechanic. I will begin by saying that...
Got going in second gear, switched to drive, and the trusty old mule sprung into overdrive, which dragged it to speed but eventually succeeded. For around one month, that was effective.
After that, the brilliant idea to swap out the gasket and filter for the gearbox came to me. Just one of the fourteen bolts was snug. With my fingers, I could spin the remaining parts. The previous cork gasket had baked on, so I had to use a gasket scraper to remove it. Someone must have modified the trans filter at some point.
Replace the fluid, filter, and neoprene gasket. Reassemble the system. She has developed a terrible whining noise and refuses to engage gears unless I gently stroke the excellerator.
Just dropped someone off in town and the transmission died, so I figured it was all over.
She was transported home on a flatbed. my own money—$70. Oh no. She reeked of burned rubber and was engulfed in smoke.
Is it feasible to repair a gearbox on a weekend in the driveway? I can use tools quite well.
Question 2: Will I require any specialized equipment?
The next question is, "How can I tell what kind of transmission I have?" Does the housing have any sort of plate connected to it or stamped onto it?
I anticipate having further inquiries in the future.

Is it possible for a shade tree mechanic to repair the one I have, or is there a firm that sells tranny's that run from $600 to $1,000 depending on the guarantee desired?
The price of a few tranny's from one manufacturer might vary from $600 to $1,000, with the exact amount depending on the chosen warranty.
Are shade tree mechanics unable to repair the one I already have?

About a dozen engines have been refurbished by me. Volkswagens with air heads, Fords, and Chevrolets with I6s and V8s. It never shifts gears. I want to restore not one, but two 46REs and a 727 this summer. In my workshop, I'll use a steel table top to repair mine in order to prevent dust from getting inside the transmission and pieces from falling out. The 46RH probably belongs to a 1995 B250. Minor divergence from the original. You should give it a go, though. Learn more using the ASTG handbook.
To remove and replace the overdrive spring on the RE, you'll need a spacer tool and a press. It is likely within your capabilities to construct a press spacer tool. The remainder primarily involves meticulously reading and following the instructions and maintaining order among the components. The replacement of components surrounding the valve body and transmission in the vehicle proceeded according to plan. Wishing you the best.
